Egon Schiele’s expressive figures and Gustav Klimt’s richly decorated paintings capture the restless spirit of Vienna around 1900. The Leopold Museum brings these artists together with works by Oskar Kokoschka and other pioneers of Austrian modernism, tracing a period when traditional art gave way to more personal and experimental forms of expression. The collection grew from the decades-long passion of Rudolf and Elisabeth Leopold, who assembled thousands of artworks. Since opening in Vienna’s MuseumsQuartier in 2001, the museum has also showcased Jugendstil furniture, design and decorative arts, revealing how the era’s artistic ideas extended beyond painting.
