The Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna was built for the imperial collections of the Habsburg dynasty and opened in 1891. Its grand building on Maria-Theresien-Platz was designed in the historicist style, with richly decorated interiors that reflect the status of the collections it was built to house. The museum is particularly renowned for its Old Masters, including works by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Caravaggio, Peter Paul Rubens, Titian and Diego Velázquez. Its collections also encompass Egyptian and Near Eastern antiquities, Greek and Roman art, medieval treasures, armour, coins and the Kunstkammer, where objects collected by the Habsburgs reveal their fascination with art, science and the unusual.
