Stretching from medieval altarpieces to contemporary art, the Hamburger Kunsthalle offers one of Germany’s richest journeys through European art history. Founded through donations from Hamburg’s citizens, the museum opened in 1869 and now occupies three striking buildings between the city’s two Alster lakes. Its collection spans eight centuries, with particular strengths in German Romanticism, Impressionism and modern art. Works by Caspar David Friedrich, Philipp Otto Runge, Manet, Monet, Munch and Picasso are among its highlights, alongside a major collection of contemporary art and works on paper.
