Grube Messel near Darmstadt preserves one of the world’s most important fossil sites. The former oil shale mine is renowned for exceptionally well-preserved fossils dating back around 47 million years, offering a rare glimpse into life during the Eocene epoch. In 1995, the site became Germany’s first natural World Heritage Site. Visitors can explore the former mine and learn about the prehistoric ecosystem through exhibitions and guided tours. Fossils of mammals, reptiles, birds, fish, insects and plants reveal an astonishingly detailed picture of a tropical landscape that existed long before humans. Among the best-known finds is “Ida”, a remarkably complete fossil primate.
