At the harbour of Lauwersoog, the Werelderfgoedcentrum Waddenzee (WEC) brings the Wadden Sea to life through nature, science and hands-on discovery. Opened in 2025, the centre offers an interactive experience exploring the UNESCO World Heritage region, from the creatures living in its tidal flats to the forces that have shaped this unique landscape. The WEC is also home to Zeehondencentrum Pieterburen, where visitors can see the seal hospital and learn about the care and research that help protect these marine mammals. With research labs, panoramic views and excursions into the surrounding area, the WEC connects the story of the Wadden Sea with the people working to protect its future.
