ValkenburgZuid-Holland/Netherlands
The Katwijk-Leiden Steam Train is a unique and lively open-air museum that takes you back to the golden age of steam trains. Located on the idyllic Valkenburgse Meer (near Leiden), everything here revolves around Dutch narrow-gauge railroads. This type of track was once used extensively in agriculture, brick manufacturing, and mining. The museum is much more than a static exhibition: you can smell the coal smoke, hear the hissing of the boilers, and take a historic ride yourself in a wooden train car pulled by a roaring steam or diesel locomotive. It’s an interactive and sensory journey for young and old alike, made possible entirely by the passion of dedicated volunteers.
