A former railway terminus has become one of Berlin’s leading museums for contemporary art. Hamburger Bahnhof opened as a museum in 1996 and occupies the surviving 19th-century station building, whose vast historic halls provide a striking setting for large-scale installations and contemporary works. Part of the Nationalgalerie of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, the museum presents art from around 1960 to the present, including painting, sculpture, photography, video and installation. Major holdings include works by Joseph Beuys, Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein and Gerhard Richter, alongside important private collections such as the Marx and Marzona Collections.
