The Bartolotti House is an architectural masterpiece from the Dutch Golden Age. Located on Amsterdam’s prestigious Herengracht, this monumental double canal house immediately catches the eye with its richly decorated, gently sloping Renaissance gable. The house was built around 1617 for the fabulously wealthy merchant and banker Willem van den Heuvel, who later took the name Giovanni Battista Bartolotti after receiving an inheritance. Since the twentieth century, the property has been owned by the Hendrick de Keyser Association. In this “Museum House,” there are no “Do Not Touch” signs: you’re actually welcome to sit on the chairs, rummage through the cabinets, and truly live in the house to experience how Amsterdam’s elite lived here over the centuries.
