The Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg is Germany’s largest museum of cultural history, tracing the German-speaking world from prehistoric times to the present. Founded in 1852, the museum grew from the vision of Franconian scholar Hans von und zu Aufseß and occupies a complex of historic buildings, including parts of a former Carthusian monastery. Its vast collection covers art, crafts, everyday objects and historical artefacts, with highlights ranging from medieval sculptures and paintings to armour, scientific instruments, musical instruments and works by Albrecht Dürer. The museum’s collections offer a broad look at how people in German-speaking regions lived, worked and expressed themselves across the centuries.
