Command Bunker Kemmel near Kemmel in West Flanders reveals a hidden chapter of Belgium’s Cold War history. Built between 1953 and 1956, the underground complex served as the command centre of the Belgian air defence system and was designed to coordinate military operations in the event of an attack. Its location beneath the Kemmelberg provided protection while maintaining a strategic position. Visitors can descend into the bunker and explore its preserved command rooms, operations centre and communications facilities. Exhibits explain the structure of Belgium’s Cold War defence and the role the bunker played within NATO’s wider military strategy.
